Message notes

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. “Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but he was born blind so that the power of God may be revealed through what happens to him.

-John 9:1-3

When I ask the question of why it can have two meanings. The first is asking what is the . The second is asking what is the . One looks to the past, the other looks to the future.

After Jesus said this, he spit on the ground. He made some mud and smeared it on the man’s eyes. He told him, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing!

John 9:6-7

Sometimes Jesus has something for in order for my miracle to take place.

Some of the Pharisees said, “Obviously this man Jesus is not from God because he is working on the Sabbath!”

-John 9:16

The man replied, “I don’t know if he is a sinner or not. All I know is that I used to be blind, but now I can see!”

-John 9:25

When Jesus heard what had happened, he found the man and said, “Do you believe in the Messiah?” The man answered, “Who is he, sir, for I want to.” “You have seen him,” Jesus said, “and he is speaking to you!” “Yes, Lord,” the man said, “I believe!” And he worshiped Jesus. Then Jesus told him, “I have come into the world to give sight to those who are spiritually blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind.” The Pharisees who were standing there asked, “Are you saying we are blind?” “If you were blind, you wouldn’t be guilty,” Jesus replied. “But your guilt remains because you claim to know what you are doing.

-John 9:35-41

LIFE APPLICATION
To discuss during the week with your family or Life Group

1. How have you explained suffering in the past? Do you look for explanations?

2. Do you give God control of all of the difficult moments in your life? How?

3. In what way(s) has religion or religious activity in the past prevented you from seeing all that Jesus would have for you?

4. What is your next step as a result of this message?
