Message notes

Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias). However, huge crowds kept following him wherever he went, because they saw the miraculous signs he performed healing the sick. After getting out of the boat, Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with his disciples. The time for the annual Jewish Passover festival was approaching quickly. But then Jesus looked up and saw a huge crowd of people coming towards him. Jesus turned to Phillip and said, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” He only asked this question though as a way of testing Phillip since he already knew what he was going to do. Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!”

-John 6:1-7

Philip went off to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the Messiah!—the very person Moses and the prophets told about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth!”

-John 1:45

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the disciples. He spoke up and said, “There is a boy here who has five small loaves of barley bread and two fish. But what good is that with all these people?” The ground was covered with grass, and Jesus told his disciples to have everyone sit down.

About five thousand men were in the crowd. Jesus took the bread in his hands and gave thanks to God. Then he passed the bread to the people, and he did the same with the fish, until everyone had plenty to eat.

-John 6:8-11

1. Jesus will often use a for miracles.

2. Jesus will use what I to to perform miracles.

After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, “Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.” So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves. When the people saw him do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed, “Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!”

-John 6:12-14

They answered, “Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do? After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say, ‘Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” Jesus then told them, “I tell you for certain that Moses wasn’t the one who gave you bread from heaven. My Father is the one who gives you the true bread from heaven. And the bread that God gives is the one who came down from heaven to give life to the world.” “Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day.” Jesus replied: I am the bread that gives life! No one who comes to me will ever be hungry. No one who has faith in me will ever be thirsty.

-John 6:30-35

My Father wants everyone who sees the Son to have faith in him and to have eternal life. Then I will raise them to life on the last day.

-John 6:40
